Recording with ME as OS?

I am in the process of buying a laptop computer. I currently run an IBM desktop and record with N-track.
The laptop that I am most interested in is a NEC. Unfortunately it comes with ME not XP and upgrading voids it's warranty. I need this laptop very soon but am told there is a new line coming out with XP as the OS. Is it worth waiting or should I just stick to ME? Does N-Track run fine on it? What about on XP?

I find it VERY hard to believe that installing XP on a laptop would void its warrenty. More likely the salesman you were talking with was smoking crack.

Apparently the warranty is based on the OS that system is running when it's brought. XP adds costs anyway, so unless ME has recording problems worse than XP i'll stick to it.

The warranty is based on the OS?!

That, my friend, is utter stupidity. If the manufacturer has that little faith in how well their hardware will cooperate with its software who knows how well your music programs will work with it. I have warning bells going off in my head very loud.

I've had ntrack working equally well in both ME and XP, though I needed the latest version (3.0.1) to run it in XP. XP in general uses more resources than ME unless you can optimize it for audio. XP aslo ins't very compatible with some of the limited hardware addon options for laptops.

Good luck! The first time you play with your tunes while flying or riding somewhere you'll really enjoy the novelty of laptop audio. :) I like mixing in coffee shops, myself. :D

I have a NEC Versa series laptop

I run cool edit pro on it with Windows ME

It runs fine with ME and as Chris said ME uses less resources

If you want to wait for XP and can find drivers for your hardware then go for it. Then at least you will have the latest OS.

But ME is great for audio

ME will work fine IF you turn off all that RESTORE and PCHEALTH crap. If you don't you'll find your laptop's hard drive will be GONE!! Sucked into the damn restore directory!!!
