Hi all!! What's the actual difference on recording to a computer from a recording output (RCA) on a mixer, and recording to computer from direct outs on each channel on a mixer?

Thanks in advance

Jamesie :)

Tere are 2 differences.
1. The direct outs are balanced, rca's are not
2. The mixer has more than 2 direct outs, so you can record more than 2 tracks at once.

Thanks Farview! Most dirsect outs I've seen are 1/4" Jacks, but I have seen another type of output (looks like a scart lead for a TV/Video player). Can this type output also be used for recording separate channels simultaneously??

Thanks again!!

Jamesie :)

I don't know what a scart lead is.
The diect outs are mostly 1/4 inch, but they are TRS and normally ballanced.

That connection is a serial port. Ive only ever really seen them used for data transmittion, not quite sure where they come into audio...

Those are d-sub connectors. My tascam DA-88's have them for thier balanced ins and outs. They are really cool, 8 connections in 1.
And yes, that is what they are for. You have to get a D-sub to 1/4 snake (or D-sub to xlr depending on you connections) in order to use it.

3. Shortest, cleanest path.

Helo!! Does anybody know if this D-sub connector can be connected straight from the mixer into the computer to record? And can the 8 separate channels I want to record, still be the 8 same separate channels on the Cakewalk software mixer (mixer on-screen) i.e. not just 2 channels (L and R) from the mixer to the computer?

Thanks :)

I don't know of any interface card that has a d-sub connector. If you found one, it would keep the 8 channels separate.

Sounds like the printer port. :p :D

you can get a d-sub to 8 channel snake for around $50

this will split the d-sub out of your mixer to 8 seperate TRS jacks.

as long as your sound card has inputs for 8 TRS jacks then you can keep them seperate. i use a firewire interface but from looking at PCI cards the 8 channel ones tend to use d-sub for their breakout cables. if this is the case, as it looks to be on the delta1010 and terratec phase 28, then you could just use a d-sub to d-sub cable and you would have 8 seperate channels. the mackie mixer you posted has another d-sub out for channels 9-16. if this is the case then you might be able to get another card with another d-sub input and then have 16 seperate channels available.

what would be cheaper, 1 high quality d-sub snake with 8 TRS or 8 high quality TRS cables?

So can you use the printer port, or do you have to get a different card?
