Hi all,

I am just starting and have what I think is a fairly simple question. When recording to hard drive using Cooledit 2000 or Cooledit Pro, can you monitor effects in real time or only apply them post-recording?

I am specifically concerned with vocal recording and being able to hear the effects of compression in my headphones as I speak (this is for voiceover work). I know this can be applied after the fact, but can I hear it AS I AM RECORDING?

Thanks

Hi Mercyme,

For most sounds the answer is "sorta."

You can hear it but with a slight, and sometimes intensely annoying, delay. I understand that some of the new ASIO drivers support very low latency (that delay) but I haven't actually worked with any of them. I usually have direct monitoring of my soundcard turned off. If I need to compress a signal going in I have to use an outboard compressor.

It may also depend on the program. I use n-Track and Cubase VST 5.0. I'm not sure about Cool Edit Pro.

I would use an outboard compressor placed in line before it reaches the computer.

If you don't have access to one, then you could simple record your voice "dry", then adjust the compression on your voice in "real-time".

But.....I guess that's sorta obvious ;)
