I would like to know how to record on to Pro Tools through an Allen & Heath GL2400 with no USB or firewire interface. I have only ever been able to record with an interface that has a USB connection and to be honest have no idea how I would begin to do this.

But I would like to upgrade from my US-1800 and get a desk with nicer pre-amps and that I can use live. I don't need to desk to act as a DAW controller - I don't have a problem with using on screen faders and transport.

Would I need another USB interface, except with no pre-amps (at least 16 inputs), and just XLR the post channel strip signal out? Do these exist? I really don't want to go through an interface with pre-amps after using the desk's pre-amps.

Any help would be very appreciated. I confuse myself so much

Could it possibly be A-D converter with a usb out option I'm after?

Yes, you need an interface with the right number of line level inputs.

The GL2400 has a direct out on each channel so that side of things is easy--finding a suitable interface might be tougher. I have no personal experience of it but I've seen the Lynx Aurora 16 recommended several times for this sort of thing.

Yeah, I looked into it as well, then got side tracked. Seems there is a limited amount of interfaces produced, without chaining up ADAT input, and most that are capable, use Firewire connection. You would think there would be more out there.....

Good call on the spammer Bobbsy. It was a cut n paste bot.
Gone now!! Reps to you!!

I would've thought that a simple 16 line-in interface would be easier to find. I'm currently using a MacBook Pro so I can't use any expansion cards - so any other connection than usb/firewire/thunderbolt is out. I've also been looking at individual channel strips with vocals in mind - something comprising of a nice pre amp and good comp/EQ sections. The only way to really incorporate that in too would be through such an interface.

Maybe a tascam DM 3200 is the way after all...

Yeah. With the number of people who want to connect a mixer into their DAW (and with 16 channels being the most standard mixer) you'd think every interface manufacturer would have a 16 channel line level only interface. Maybe we should invent one and make our collective fortunes.

That said, I use a Yamaha DM1000 as my input, a bit like your Tascam plan.

Wish I paid more attention in my audio technology practical lessons at uni. Never got in to the creating side of it. Would be an awesome bit of gear to have!

Perhaps manufacturers assume that if you want 16 line inputs and use a mixer then you have a more stationary rig with a desktop computer and so can use a PCI based system. The MOTU 24i/o and its PCI host card would be the perfect solution if you weren't using a laptop.

The ICE-16 looks great! And the fact that I could record all the gigs that the desk is used for without my laptop is the cherry on top.
