recording vocals

I'm just pulling this Fostex MR-8mk II out of the box after 2 years and I'm having trouble hearing as well as recording my vocals. Hearing and recording the guitar is no problem but I can't even hear my vocals through the headset at all... Any suggestions?

Are you tracking hot enough--getting a meter reading of up to about -4 ??
