Recording vocals without pink/white/static/room noise...

Hello,

I manage to get a somewhat clean vocal but not completely. How do I get clean vocals without pink/white/static/room noise?


I have a Perception 220 microphone that uses phantom power. I have it plugged into a presonus vacuum tube preamp ,which is plugged into my Alesis MultiMix8 USBFX channel mixer, which is connected to my Macbook pro laptop where I use Logic Pro 9.

I want clean vocals for my louder vocals as well as my softer vocals.

Any tips on level setting and noise reducing would be greatly appreciated! I am spending days reading and learning and applying but decided to start reaching out in forums as well.

Try losing the Presonus and just use the preamps on your Alesis.

Set your preamps to peak about -18dBFS. No need to go louder than that.

What TR said ditch the Presonus.

Back off the mic in the louder parts to avoid overloading the capsule or the rest of your signal chain.

Thanks guys I'll be sure to try that out tomorrow. I have another question:

Should I wait until after I record the vocals to gate, compress, and EQ and FX in Logic? What are your thoughts...before or after audio? Does it make a difference or does it depend on the circumstance? My thought is that, if i preset Logic before the vocal is recorded, the vocal take will be affected and further edits will actually make it worse. I'm thinking that the logic levels should be set after, so you have more to work with?

After you record - do it when recording and you can't alter the FX after.
