I was just wondering: Is there any advantage to recording vocals with 2 mics for added depth. I was thinking a LDM along with a dynamic (SM57). Just curious if anyone has tried and what their results were.

Thanks

It couldn't hurt. It will give you more audio to use, and if you don't like one of the recordings you can just throw that part out in the mix.

Just to clarify, I was thinking of using both at the same time, not layered.

It's a vailid idea, but whether it will be of any good or bad in any particular situation is a coin toss. Matching mics to voices is a bit like matching shoes to feet; what works best for one voice isn't necessarily best for another. The best you can do is experiment around.

I've seen film of Sam and Dave using dual mics, one on a boom stand like normal, and the other just taped to the top (or bottom) of it. I couldn't tell you the models offhand, though.

Also, another trick is to use a second mic to fatten up thin vocals by pointing the second mic down toward the chest.

I have used two at once to try it out, and I got pretty good results. They were cheap mics AT2020 &2021, but it turned out pretty good.

i do it often, like any other situation where 2 mics are involved, phase is critical.

a ribbon with a small diaphragm condenser can completely rule. keep the elements close.

having a 451 type microphone around to add air to any mic is a good idea actually. i used to do that all the time. thanks for reminding me.
