Hi,
Nothing complicated here. I have prepared backing tracks on my laptop. I simply wish to record vocals alongside track and have the ability to mix and add effects later. Do I simply need a mic pre amp or will I require a mixing desk?

You need a pre-amp and ADA conversion. At the top end look at Apogee Duet 2, RME Babyface, Sound Devices USBPre 2.

You need an audio interface (one with a mic preamp will simplify your need) and a DAW (recording software). You do all the mixing in the DAW. You'll also need monitors, headphones (for tracking) a mic stand, and a pop filter.

"Stuff" that appears under the solid black line in a post is a member's signature. Which may contain useful information or rubbish. The comments were not directed at you!

And you don't really need to go "top end" for equipment.
