Hi,
Nothing complicated here. I have prepared backing tracks on my laptop. I simply wish to record vocals alongside track and have the ability to mix and add effects later. Do I simply need a mic pre amp or will I require a mixing desk?

Yes - a mic preamp with USB out or firewire out (whatever you have for inputs on your laptop.
You mix using the recording software in your laptop - if you need some get Reaper software for free. You mix using the Reaper GUI then export it to MP3 for distribution.
I use a condensor mic -> U42S -> Laptop-> Sonar 6.0...

M-Audio seems pretty popular around here for preamps
