Recording vocals and acoustic guitar: How far from the mic?

I get a lot of bass in my vocals and acoustic guitar recordings. To the point where I have to EQ off the bass very heavily.

I am using a Rode NT1-A Studio Condenser Microphone. Unfortunately I am surrounded by bare walls on three sides and empty space behind me. Anytime i close mic it is very bassy. Now i am placing the mic 18 inches above my guitar or the mouth and get a better recording. At least the guitar sounds less bassy and with more definition. If I get close the bass response soars.

I even tried placing the mic behind the guitar and got a decent sound. What gives?

Thanks! I tend to do recording by feel and I am finally seeking a method.

(of course they work for any mic...)

This should be on every recordist's computer.

To quote a few famous but cheery' fellows

'They say my methods may be ..'unsound
Do you think my methods are.. 'unsound?'

'I don't see.. any 'method at all '
