recording vinyl to pc

In order to copy old records onto my pc, I had to install a RCA 2 into 1 mini Y adaptor, the mini connects to the sound card on my computer. All works great, except the music is recorded only on the left or right channel. Is there a way to fix this, even if just duplicating the one channel to the other exactly so they match upon playback?

Are you using your soundcard's mic or line input? If you're using the mic input, you really should be using the line. And if your record player doesn't have its own preamp, you'll probably have to go through a receiver or a preamp into your soundcard.

Or are mic inputs on soundcards stereo? I guess I don't know. I think they're mono.

I am using the line input and I am going thru a receiver, it is working great except when I play it back, I get sound only out of the left channel. Can I duplicate or copy this channel to the second channel somehow so that I at least get sound out of both speakers?

You can, but you shouldn't have to, and it wouldn't be true stereo anyway... it's a stereo LP, and a stereo record player, right?

Hm, I'm stumped. What program are you using to record the waves? To you have it set up to listen to both the left and right channels? I know that with Cakewalk, you can do left, right, or stereo. Have you tried doing a test with any other wave editors? If it only plays back on one side with another program, you'll know it has nothing to do with the setup of the program you're trying to use.
