I am seriously thinking about getting a reel to reel recorder for my home stuff, but I am wondering if I am going to be able to easily and effectively add and tweek effects when mixing down. I am using the 488 and on that adding reverb and delay at mixdown is no problem, but I am wondering how to do this when mixing down from the 8 tracks of music on the reels themselves, as a regular reel to reel deck has no real eq or effects sening/receiving capabillities.
Please help me here, it would be appreciated.

Hey LonelyBeat,

Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, what you would do is add a mixer to the equation, the chain of gear and events would basicaly be like:
1. 8 Reel machine outs>
2. 8 Mixer's channel ins >
3. EQ(On each of the 8 mixer channels)>
4. Effects Send (on mixer channels)>
5. Outboard Effects processors In/Outs >
6. Effects Return (on mixer channel) >
7. Mixer LR out >
8. Mixdown unit ins.

I hope that helps you out some.

(Be sure to visit the "Analog only" section of this site for further Reel to Reel info.)
