recording through line input

I am having problems recording anything through the line input in my computer. I've tried to record songs from a 4-track cassette player utilizing a standard cord with an 1/8th inch stereo input on one end and 2 RCA plugs on the other end. What could my possible problems be (other than a bad line input)?

what are you using to record and what is the problem exactly?

I am using the Sound Recorder program bundled with Windows 95 on one PC, Sound Recorder with Windows 98 on another.

I don't knowe how to tell if the Line Input is defective. However, when I run the output from a VCR, for example, into the Line Input, I get extremely loud volume that distorts and I have no way to control it. The line input volume control in record mode does not control it.

Sure you aren't using the mike-in in error?Perhaps the mixer setting if off.The VCR is a line level device and should record easily.I have used VCR to line in on my gear multiple times.
In the windows mixer,select options-properties-record.Now experiment,select one at a time both mike in and line in with your VCR in the jack you think is line in.Swap jacks and use both settings in the windows mixer (volume control).See if that takes care of your problem.

Thanks, Tom. I did try that awhile back and with no luck. I am going into the mixer and enabling line in for recording and disabling the others (CD, wav, etc.). I either get nothing for a level or a high volume that couldn't be controlled (and still no level on the meter). But the recorder will record perfectly fine from the CD-ROM drive, so it seems like a line input problem.

Good thought about the 4-track output but I increased and decreased the 4-track output and still couldn't get a level to show up on the line input meter. I plugged the 4-track output into a standard 2-track tape deck and it was fine.

Make sure that the four speaker is muted as this uses the line in. (a mistake that i have made more than few times!)

I haven't used 98 or 95 for a couple years, so this instruction is from memory...but it should be close .

Go Start->Settings->Control Panel.
Click on Multimedia
On the Audio tab, click the Icon on Recording.
This will give you levels for any inputs you have.
Mess with those until you get the sound you want.
Also, on the "Advanced" button there, set everything as high as it will go, for best quality.

Go to www.fasoft.com and download the demo of N-Track and try it out. It will do you more justice than Windows sound recorder.

the 4 speaker is for surround sound it should be on your playback controls in windows mixer. But your soundcard may not even have this so if not just forget everything ive just said.
