Hey my band is doing a home recording project and we dont have most of the proffessional gear but we are trying to get the best quility sound possible from our equipment.
We have a not so great mixer, a shure sm57, JTS nx 2, sm 58 and another condenser mic and we are using a computer.
Recording the drums has been are most difficult task, getting the right sound. What setting do we need to use on the mixer to get the desired sounds. We want a sharp attack from the snare with a lot of crack, and a nice sharp boom from the bass drum, with not a lot of resonating. On our mixer we the gain, high, medium and low.

i've been playing and recording drums for years so I can tell you from experience - the MOST important elements are:

How the drummer strikes the drum
How well that drum is tuned
the acoustics of the room
where the mics are in relation to the drums, the walls, the ceiling and other objects in the room...

No amount of gear or processing (aside from triggering samples, I guess) can help you get the crack and boom you're looking for -- you need to start at the source.
