I have gotten ok results recording the bass direct but I was wondering of a even better way to improve the recording of the bass. Any suggestions? amp? preamp? techniques?

I am just going directly to my mixer to the Hi-Z input. I am a newbie in everything.

I use an MXR M-80 Bass DI, and I've gotten some great results. Another popular choice is the SansAmp Bass DI. There are pros and cons to both, but both seem to be getting good feedback. The Countryman DI is another that comes highly recommended for bass.
Going direct can work, but I find I prefer something to color the sound more.

I have heard (but never tried) that one of the good uses for the ART Tube MP is as a Bass DI.

Zoom 506II is an excellent Bass DI at a cheap price. Plug your bass into it, find a good tone, plug the DI into a preamp, and basically forget about it.

The ever-useful J-Station/J-Edit setup has a wealth of excellent bass amp and bass cab models as well as very sophisticated effects that work well for bass (particularly compression). Nice S/PDIF digital out, too.

There are those who feel the J-Station is even better for bass than for guitar. Go into J-Edit and tweak it until you have a bunch of dream settings.

Perfectly good used J-Stations can be found for under $100 and brand new ones for under $150. At that price, lots of folks consider them a home-studio must.
