Just curious, do you have to collect sales tax, or are you exempt under the "Professional Services" clause?

My Experiance

If what you do is record as a service and have the client bring their media for you to offload onto then you won't have to collect sales tax on the service provided, alternately if you provide the media for free and don't charge for it you can probably get by as well. However as soon as you start charging for a tangible item like a finished CD you have to collect sales tax on that amount.

For instance, you charge for 10 hrs @ $40hr plus a couple of one off CDs for $25 each you would charge $50+tax for CDs and $400 service.
If for instance you charge a set rate of $500 for say 2 songs completed on CD you would then have to charge tax on the whole amount.
This is my understanding, someone like Harvey Gearst (who has been doing this a lot longer than I) may be able to explain it better.

Good to see someone from my neck of the woods.
Yes I own / operate a studio in the South Arlington / North Mansfield area around the Hwy 286 corridor. Where in Fort Worth are you?
If you ever need to get in touch email me at: tmix@bigfoot.com
Or through the BBS. If you email me I'll give you my phone # or whatever info you want.

no, I knew who the toadies were before they went big. Todd Lewis used to live 3 house up. Parents still live there thou. I just thought toadies was a cool screen name so its been that for about 5 years.
