I will be upgrading my studio here in the next year or so. Do you think it would be un-wise to buy a 17 inch powerbook, with tons of ram ofcourse, to be my main recording computer? From time to time I hear that I shouldn't use a laptop for a main recording station due to scratch discs, ram, and HD space. Howerver, I think those things can be solved by planning ahead (ex. more ram, big harddrive)

Or should I go ahead and get a new G5, and monitor... ?

Also, I have an Mbox, and will be upgrading to the digi001. Are there any deals that I don't know about where I can trade in my Mbox towards the purchase of an 001 ??

I will also need some monitors. How do the hook ups work with an Mbox? what kind should I look at?

I guess you could use Powerbook as your DAW, but the question is why? Are you really going to do so much mobile recording that a laptop is absolutely essential? In even if you are, in my experience you have to lug so much outboard gear with you anyway that one laptop won´t make a big difference.

Just my 2c.

You will usually spend 2-3x as much on a laptop to get the same or worse performance as a desktop. They are also much harder to upgrade in the future and are limited with the types and numbers of cards/interfaces you can use with them.

Hey,
No Digi specific way of upping from a Mbox to a 001. You could sell the Mbox for around 350 or more and buy a used 001 on ebay and come out with just a little bit more. Digidesign does have a program to trade in the Mbox towards a 002r or 002. Hope that helps.
