I am currently using Cakewalk's Home Studio 2002. I got this about a year ago because I was just starting to get involved in computer recording.

Now I feel I am ready to move up, but am unsure what software would best fit my needs and am looking for opinions/advice.

Computer requirements should not be a problem. I have a 1.6g processor and a 60gigs on the hard drive w/Pentium IV.

Mainly my uses are to multitrack from my synths and I want to utilize many sound effects/plug ins. I also am looking to have a software sampler which leads me to Cubase. An unlimited number of audio tracks is important. (I don't use MIDI much).

The two programs I have been looking at are Sonar and Cubase. What does everyone think?

One vote for sonar,I've only used cakewalk products so my experience is very limited, but it should do everthing you want it to.
There are software samplers available that work right inside sonar so that should'nt be a problem.

Since you've already used Home Studio, I think Sonar would be the logical chouice. You wouldn't have much of a learning curve, since the products are similar.
