Hi there, I'm a drummer who has took it upon himself to learn the ways of recording so I can competantly record my band and get some good(ish) recordings of my band together. But here's my dilemma; I own a BOSS BR-1180CD digital recorder, I've only used it a couple of dozen times for basic stuff but I also own a full PA system with a Peavey PV6 USB powered mixer. Now, would I be better off just recording through the mixer onto my PC via the USB and using software to mix and master it or would I be better of recording it onto the BR-1180CD recording equipment? what are the advantages compared to using equipment compared with software? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for the time :)

In either case you're probably limited to two tracks at a time. It can be tough to capture drums or a whole band that way without the advantage of being able to balance the tracks later. Maybe you can trade the Boss in for a computer interface with eight or more inputs.

The Boss is a 10 track but if were to trade it in for a computer interface what would you reccomened or atleast point me in the right direction? And what exactly do they do? (I'm extremely new to this)

It's not the number of tracks that boulder is talking about, although 10 is too few probably for a band these days, it's the number of tracks you can record at the one time, separately. Your mixer only has a stereo output, therefore you can only record two tracks at once (and keep them separate). Pretty limiting for drums in particular.

I'll leave the interface recommendations to others, just wanted to ensure you got the point being made...
