recording slapback

i was having trouble with a slapback when recording from my synthesizer (or my microphone) into the soundcard. the speakers would repeat what i just played back a fraction of a section later (it sounded like a crappy delay). this made it hard for me to play accurately; i found i could solve the problem by TURNING DOWN THE VOLUME ON THE TRACK BEFORE RECODING. i could still here what i was playing, and the adjustment of the track's volume didn't affect the in level.

p.s. i have home studio 2002 and XP

What you are hearing is first the original signal and then the signal that passed through your computer.To eliminate the echo go to audio options and disable input monitoring.
