I've been recording my songs onto a Boss BR-864 w/ A Yamaha mixer. I want to be more flexible in recording, so i'm thinking about going to a Computer Based System. Here is the setup i'd like to go with-I'd like to get any suggestions to this setup-
Chipset-AMD Athlon XP3000PR 2.2 GHz (400MHz FSB)
Board-ASUSA7V600
RAM-1024MB DDR 400
HD-(2) 80GB SERIAL ATA (SATA) 7200RPM)

and to get the music in-
MAudio Audio Delta 1010.
Gameplan-Record Live Drums (6-7 Tracks) while listening to Click or Scratch Tracks, overlay Bass, Guitar, Vocals.
Chain:
Instrument->mic->Pre-Amp and Dynamic Effects->MAudio Delta 1010->
Computer IN->Computer OUT->Yamaha Mixer->Speaker Monitors.
Any Suggestions would be really appreciated. I need as much feedback as possible.

you cant beat an athlon. i'm a computer engr and love amd.
a tip for you. try not to put anything in pci slots other than
the delta sound card. yamaha mg are good little mixers.
another tip. keep to 120 gb drives max.
if you want multitrack software i highly recommend (you didnt mention it)
powertracks from pgmusic.com.
49 bucks for 48 tracks. tracks can be audio or midi.you wont beat it for the price. if you have anymore Q's - just ask.

Checked out the software you suggested. Real easy to use, seems like it has everything you could need for a small project...very cool...thx

also try band in a box sometime...if you dont have other musicians to play with. they have god knows how many song styles in biab.
you create the band in biab then import to powertracks and add all your lead vocals, guitar etc etc. in support section as well are free tutorials.

Not meaning to derail this thread but the recording chain confuses me:

"Instrument->mic->Pre-Amp and Dynamic Effects->MAudio Delta 1010->
Computer IN->Computer OUT->Yamaha Mixer->Speaker Monitors"

Why is the Yamaha mixer in the playback portion of the chain if you are intending to monitor the actual mix as created/edited on the PC?

Thx for the feedback Rudy-I want all the suggestions i can get. Your right, I can just listen to the mix via the computer outputs directly into the monitors. I thought if I took the Soundcard OUT into track 5/6 (L/R), I could attach my CD Player into track 7/8 and my cassette deck into 9/10 and be able to use my monitors with multiple purpose. Give me your thoughts? Could it have a higher downside than an upside?

I think he is just trying to suggest you use your mixer when you lay your tracks, not for playback (you could do both, but you already stated you could use your pc). Try not to get too much going in your chain, it adds unwanted noise and could get confusing. Your software can do all the mixing and playback wihout having to go back through the mixer.

Rokket-Thx...So you think just running in this chain would be best
Source->Mic->Preamp/Compressor/N.G.->Delta IN->Soundcard IN (MIXER and EFFECTS within Computer Software)-->Soundcard OUT->Monitors
Please let me know if this will be a cleaner chain...

Yeah, seems like a cleaner chain to me. The Yamaha mixer could be used prior to the soundcard IN too if your soundcard does not have enough channels to cover your requirements. Otherwise, it seems to me the sound editing software would cover mixing chores and offer more options. I am just a newbie myself so beware of my advice!

Your advice is sound. That's how I would run it. I use a digital recorder, so my chain is a bit different, because I record to the digital and then copy the tracks to my pc to mix. Good luck with it all! :D
