Howdy y'all, I got a quick question that you more experienced sound techs may be able to answer. I'm recording a little 3 piece bluegrass/folk project, guitar, mandolin, electric bass and two part harmonies. I have a tascam 8 track cassette recorder that I will be recording with, and I have the option of recording 4 tracks at a time, two of which have the option for phantom power.
I want to record the guitar, mandolin and vocals in one take to get a live feel, and then overdub the bass later, my question concerns the setup options of the equipment i have at my disposal.
As far as I can see, I have three options,
1. Use four dynamic mics, one for each instrument and voice. I have one sm58 and a three ok sennheiser dynamics.
2. Use two condensers, I have two of the cheapo mxl 990's that have saturated the market.
3. Use a combination of the two mxls, plus two dynamics, the latter for either the vocals or the instruments.
I would like to get an old school recorded live in the kitchen type sound, and I was wondering if you have any suggestions or pointers.
Thank you for your help.
My best regards-
