Recording Rap vocals in a closet

hey guys ill try to be specific with what i want answered


first of all my closet is in the basement it is pretty small... its a rectangle shape about 8x2.5 ahah yeah its thin and about 6.5 feet tall...

1)right now i record just in a normal room in my basement.. from what I've read so far on this forum, that totally makes my quality worse....i stated in another thread my gear firestudio project and ksm9 .... i was wondering if i should move the microphone into the closet.... if the answer is yes, then what kind of padding or acoustics whatever it is called (sorry), do i need to buy in order to make the closet a good place to record my vocals

Is your closet filled with clothes? If not try putting some in there, record with clothing in front of you, try with clothing behind you, try more clothing, less, etc, etc.

The secret is simple: try different configurations and see what sounds the best for you, your voice, your music.

I'd say, without knowing anymore about your place, there's a good chance that you can make the closet work better than a bigger, open room, but you have to try it out and see.

Of course all this depends on what sound you're going for.

thanks joel there is nothing its just a empty closet ....should i buy comforters or invest in real padding or whatever it is? also i need to buy monitors i think.....but what are they? are they just speakers?
 
Ok hold on, that closet is WAY to small to get a decent sound. Stick to the open room. You will not have anyone tell you it is best to shove yourself into a tiny little space to get good sound. Like I said stick to the open room.

okay stealth well my room is just a normal square... where should i position my mic and what should i put on the walls?
 
The closet sounds like it's going to be too small to record vocals. As for your questions about monitors you should really try Googleing that topic. Monitors are much much more than just speakers. You will find this out if you try mixing on some regular speakers and playing it back on some different systems. I definitely recommend checking out some books on recording or searching around the Home Recording web site. Good luck.

That's almost never true...sorry Joel. I agree with the rest of the posters. The larger room is usually a better option with some reasonable treatment.

If you're going to give the closet a try, don't buy anything. Tack up some heavy blankets, think those ones you get in the back of a rented moving truck. If you get it dead enough, it could work. But by the time you get it treated, you may barely be able to fit in there!

The reason I'm more optomistic than many here is that a lot of rap vox seem to be very compressed and without much 'air' in them, like a sung vocal might. I think a dead closet would be fine. I don't rap in a closet, but I get right up in the mic and compress heavily. If I need a little more spacious vocal, I just double the track (I mean record it twice, not duplicate) and eq and pan the two differently, kindof like I would with a heavy guitar part. A really quick 'slap' delay is also cool sometimes.
 
Don't use the closet. Why do people think that recording in a box won't sound like a box???? Where did this whole "closet" nonsense come from anyway????
 
@tc4b... Thing is, a closet won't be dead. It would be plagued with boxy reflections that would be further emphasised with heavy compression and just scream AMATEUR RECORDING whenever someone listened to it.

Without a doubt I'd rather record vocals in a larger, untreated room than a closet lined with useless foam!

I think a lot of the 'bright ideas' about shutting yourself in a closet have been propagated by youtube, both by videos of professional musicians recording in vocal booths (which people try to copy), and home recordists showing off their home studios including their own vocal booths. The unfortunate truth is that the vocal booths in many professional studios are more the size of your average home studio main/live room.

....you think it takes effort to press a button? are you fat man? i just choose not to because i dont feel its neccesary unless you really can't understand me gramatically because of a missing period? also dont judge my work ethic over a post on the INTERNET.. i sit on my computer literally all day researching more and more so I can be more familiar with the correct recording terms etc... i record my vocals all day long and mess around with them until i have them sounding as good as or until i feel like killing someone because of all the stress... dont be hostlie to me like i ever did anything that hurt you....im not trying to act 'cool' im just trying to get some help .. i dont understand ur problem im giving everybody feedback saying thank you not being rude at all and you come into my thread acting like a God?

anyways, I did the research and found out what I need to buy but does anybody know how MUCH i should buy? I think im just gonna record in a corner of my room... btw my room is about 13x13 and almost 7 feet high

However, heres a clue.
Rap, typically has a frequency band of + or - 25hz. Thats because it's SPEECH, which typically is in the 1khz range. Think "Mary had a little lamb....."

On the other hand, SINGING, which, depending on the singer, can have a frequency band of up to 5 OCTAVES:rolleyes: Think Opera.

Resistance absorption is frequency dependent. It's maximum performance is at 1/4 wavelength. I'll let you do the research and extrapolation.

(hint... wavelength=speed of sound/frequency
Speed of sound is accepted as 1125.33 ft. per second
hence...
a 1khz wavelength = 1.1253 ft or 13.5039 inches
What is 1/4 wavelenth at 1000 hz?) ie...AN ABSORBER THICKNESS=maximum 1/4 wavelenth absorption
