Hey I have been recording at a studio for a couple of years, but I have never had to use computer programs. I was the mix/mastering engineer, so I never had experience with that kind of thing. Now that I have gotten into home recording, I was wondering what kind of program to use, all my buddies at the studio only do professional work. I would appreciate all the help I can get and the sooner the better. Thanks!

I use both Adobe Audition, and Sonar. Both seem to work well for me. Sonar has the capabilities of using soft synth instruments.

If you can live with the limitations of Pro Tools, then there is no really good reason not to go the Pro Tools Route. Personally, I use Cubase SX. Most all of the software nowadays is pretty capable. Some of the most common professional and semi-pro programs are: Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, Logic, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Samplitude, and even Adobe Audition.
