I am new to cool edit pro 2,and I'm having a few problems whilst trying to record guitar/bass/vocals.
For vocals I am going from my pre amp output on the back, into my sound card. All recording volumes in my sound card mixer are set for line in,but nothing is being recorded. There are two aux outputs on the front, maybe I should use them?I don't know.
Also whilst trying to record bass, direct from the line out on the back of the amp, still nothing recorded. The only way I can record anything is to put a mic, direct into sound card and then record the guitar that way,but I want as little noise as possible.
I am girl, and a novice to recording,so I am probably missing something completely obvious here.
Any adbice would be great.

When you say it's not recording do you mean you can't hear it coming out of the speakers or it's not recording in cool edit pro?

What soundcard do you have?

Tukkis;)

When recording vocals,I'm using my p.a.....there is no sound from my speakers, and no recorded sound in cool edit. When I record my bass, using the line out from my amp(combi),there is no sound from either my amp speaker, the pc speaker and nothing recorded in cool edit.
The sound card is pretty naff- AC'97,which was in when I bought the computer. But I 've been told I can use it for cool edit, but I can only use one port at a time, either line in or mic.But as yet,the only way I can record is putting a mic straight inot the mic port, but that sounds pretty naff.

Ok it sounds like you haven't selected 'Line In' as the record device and haven't turned the volume up on it.

Go to the little speaker icon in the bottom corner of the taskbar and double click on it.
Then click properties-->recording
Then make sure you have 'Line In' selected as the recording port and make sure you have the volume up.

Also make sure that in the playback options of the same sound settings that the Line In volume is up.

And finally make sure that you have actually plugged the mic or bass into the Line In port on the soundcard and not line out or something else.

Tukkis:cool:

I have checked ,and everything is set right.the record levels are set for line in and the volume is up three quarters of the way ,and to make sure I have tried using both line ports ,still nothing.
My bass combi amp and the p.a. are working . I just can't record the buggers!!!

"Also whilst trying to record bass, direct from the line out on the back of the amp, still nothing recorded. The only way I can record anything is to put a mic, direct into sound card and then record the guitar that way,but I want as little noise as possible."

How do you put the mic direct into the soundcard? And how does that differ from the way you're trying the line in stuff?

"All recording volumes in my sound card mixer are set for line in"

Okay, and what have you got selected in Cool Edit for 'Recording Devices'?

The first time I tried recording anything in cool edit,I put my microphone into the mic port of my sound card(with the help of a stereo plug adapter.I also made sure the recording options on the windows mixer volume was set to microphone.I then place the mic in front of my bass amp.It worked okay, but there was a lot of background noise which I didn't like .
So ,I then tried using the line in,from the line out of my amp,but even after changing the volume recording and playback controls to line out, there is nothing at all recorded.I have looked at the device order box and it shows the following:-

UNUSED RECORDING DEVICES
(nothing in here)

MULTI TRACK DEVICE PREFERENCE ORDER

1st AC '97 [EV]
2nd Wave Mapper
3rd Voice Modem wave#00 Line
4th Game Compatible Device
5th Voice Modem Wave#00 Handset

All of these were in the unused recording devices,I just selcted them all,but put ac'97 as the first one.

Since you're using only the first item on the list to record, I'd leave that where it is (MT Device Preference Order) and I'd shift all the others to Unused Recording Devices. Wave Mapper's usable, but inferior. I don't think this will solve your problem, but it's good housekeeping. The fact that you can record using mic in means that Cool's recognizing the soundcard and what's coming from it.

Next, as long as you've selected the device correctly Cool will record it. So, I can only imagine two possibilities:

1 you've selected the soundcard as a device correctly, but not the correct channel on the soundcard - I don't think that's it actually, because 'AC '97' doesn't seem to offer any alternatives

2 the line in on your soundcard isn't working

Does your soundcard have settings you can adjust onscreen? Does the soundcard have an icon in your computer taskbar that you can click on to show its properties?

Okay, one more possibility, but it's a long shot. When you record a new track in Cool, you have to choose a recording device in multitrack - the choices are 'Left Channel' 'Right Channel' and 'Stereo'. Which one are you clicking on? Have you tried both left channel and right channel to see if it makes a difference?

this may be a shitty question and dont take offense if its basic- but do you have tracks armed to record?, and those tracks have the input selected for each track?

Yes,the tracks are armed for recording.I have downloaded the turorials from syntrillium software,so I am pretty sure on what I am doing with the actual programme, and like I said ,I can record by puting a mic direct into the sound card mic port.I just can't use the line in,even tho everything is set right for it.I am beginning to think maybe the line in port if broke.
