First off, hello everyone.

I'm trying to record into pro tools 9 with some sm57's. I'm using Rokit 5 monitors and a PreSonus Firebox. I have my monitors running out of the main outs (1 and 2).

I'm also putting the sm57 into instrument 1 channel.

So my question is, how can I use both 1 and 2 channel inputs to record, while also using my monitors?

Do I need to change the signal path or anything in pro tools to make this happen. I'm a recording noob.

Thank you!

You plug mic one into microphone input one, and mic two into microphone input two,
then in protools you arm a stereo track with its inputs set to mic1+2, or two mono tracks with their inputs set to mic1 and mic2.

Input 1 doesn't necessarily correspond to output 1.
You could have an interface with 12 mic preamps, everything would still come out of outputs 1+2 to the monitors.

You have to follow these instructions, specifically...
If you want to record an instrument in STEREO...
1.) Click on SETUP>I/O
2.) Make sure you're on the input tab. Select the format, and change it to stereo. Pro Tools should automatically locate inputs 1 & 2 to your Firebox.
3.) Make a new stereo audio track (Control+Shift+N, or on a Mac, Command+Shift+N, and select "Stereo" and "Audio Track")
4.) Select "Input 1+2 (Stereo)" from the input tab.
5.) Make it record ready, and voila.

If you want a MONO track, just change a few steps...

1.) Click on SETUP>I/O
2.) Make sure you're on the input tab. Select the format, and change it to mono. Pro Tools should automatically locate inputs 1 & 2 to your Firebox.
3.) Make a new mono audio track (Control+Shift+N, or on a Mac, Command+Shift+N, and select "Mono" and "Audio Track"). If you want to record two different tracks at once, make two mono audio tracks.
4.) Select "Input 1 (Mono)" from the input tab. (If you're recording two tracks, select "Input 2 (Mono)" on the second track you're recording.)
5.) Make it/them record ready, and voila.

Oh, and welcome to HR.com. =]
