So whenever I try to record, the mic jack is clipping all the way to the max, non stop. if I mute the microphone in the volume control it goes down. but whenever I try to record it is clipping all the way and picks up no sound. Additionally, if I unplug the guitar from the computer is still does that, which leads me to believe it's a PC issue but not the guitar overdoing it.

Any ideas?

It might help if you tell us what you're recording with. Onboard sound, sound card, etc. How are the guitar and mic connected to the sound card?

Don't plug the guitar into the mic jack unless it's been dubbed an instrument input...

Sounds a bit like a feedback loop...

onboard sound... I've tried plugging it directly in, as well as through and amp... but it still does the clipping when nothing is plugged in.

any ideas?

if this is a feedback loop, what can be done to correct that?

if you plug a guitar directly into a computer's mic or line input, it's gonna clip like crazy. no way around that.

yes, but this happens even when nothing is plugged into the microphone jack.

it's puzzling..

Then you've probably blown the arse out of your soundcard by pluging a line level source i.e. your guitar directly into the mic input
