recording problem-need help

This may seem like a dumb question to some. I feel like i know what to do but I just cant figure it out. This is my situation, I am trying to playback a track and record over it at the same time, which I know my soundcard is capable of but for some reason when i try to record vocals over the instrumental, its recording the instrumental again. so its like i mute the instrumental track just to hear the vocals but it rerecorded the music again. so i dont have individual tracks. anyhow im sure you get what im saying. but someone please tell me what im missing. I am recording with Acid Pro 3.0 and Aardvard soundcard. thanks
 
This is probably because the Aardvark routing software is enabled to record from the audio stream it's playing back. It should be enabled only to record from the Line In or a Mic In (if it's one of those Aardvarks with mic preamp channels in it).
 
sounds like that may help me but how do i go about changing it to record from line in/mic in. seems like i've looked everywhere.
 
It would be in the Aark control panel/mixer/whatever they call it. Sorry, I don't have an Aardvark card or I could be more explicit.
