Recording one track to another

How do I do this?

I want to manually apply a VST comb filter effect on the playback of a track that I recorded, adjusting the filter characteristics on the fly, as I see fit.

But I wish to record the output sound on another track. How do I do this?

I have a Delta 66 soundcard and MAudio software mixer. In the "old" days it would mean checing the What U hear icon

Simple:

Add a new audio track and arm it for recording

Mute everything except the track that you want to record.

Turn off the metrononme in record, if it's enabled...

Hit Record.

Stop at the end.

You can also use the Edit - Bounce to Track (s) command.

Doesn't work. If it was as simple as that I would have cracked it. It just flatlines in the new track. But I can hear the track being played back.

The effect I want to use modulates the sound of the original track so its not just a matter of cloning. I want the new track to have the manually altered effect imprinted on it. I suppose I could connect a physical output to an input in my omni, that would work.

Does your M Audio allow you to route your signal path? My Edirol Da-2496 allows me to route the output of 3/4 to inputs 1/2.

If you can do that, you can send the output to your 3/4 and record tracks 1/2 and your adjustments will be recorded along the way.

Just mute the unwanted tracks and tweak away!!

I'm not sure how the Delta 66 (*wiping drool from my keyboard* ) soundcard works, but to do this with my lowly Santa Cruz I have to change the Record Source from Line In to Stereo Mix in its control panel. Don't know if this helps any.

Sorry about my flip answer, Paul881 ("simple," indeed!)

I looked at the Delta mixer and tried to do what you are trying to, and couldn't figure it out. If I get a chance I'll see if the Delta manual explains it. Seems to me it should be like guttadaj says -- there should be a way to route the output of the track into the input.

Al Chuck, Guttadaj and Porter, Thanks for the input fellas. This is so simple it is crazy And yet I can't figure it out. If I live to be a hundred, I'll never understand the Delta mixer manual. In theory, the Delta "outs" should be able to be patched into the Delta "ins".

If you figure out how this is done, please let me know In the meantime I will study the manual again and see if I can get it to do what I want.

In your Delta Control Panel under the Patchbay/Router tab, can't you route the H/W Out 3/4 to H/W In 1/2? ie, send the out's to 3/4 and record tracks 1/2 coming in..

BTW.. Personally I don't use the a Delta, however the control panel looks almost the same as the one I use.

OK, here's a way that works:

Open the M Audio control panel.

On the Monitor Mixer page, make sure HW Outputs 3/4 are not muted (I don't use mine, typically, maybe you don't either).

On the Patchbay/Router page. select HW In 1/2 in the HW Out 3/4 column.

In SONAR, arm your track and select Left, Right, or Stereo Mon. Mixer Delta 66 as the input source.

Start recording, twiddling your parameters in your effect as you go.

The resultant audio output should be captured in the newly-recorded audio track.

Success! The critical point was that I had to select my Delta 66 monitor mixer as the Wave Recording device in Options>General.

Hmmmm.... I might try and do one of them one days... I imagine my Edirol and the M-Audio would be similar.. just the number of inputs would differ.
