recording on the go

ok my main medium at home for recording onto is my boss br 532 multi track, and i will soon be using a behringer phantom power unit to power a condenser. i will the transfer track to my laptop and mix them. i have also learnt that i could also just record str8 into my laptop by putting a headphone jack extention onto the end of an xlr to jack lead. this isnt obviously a good idea for layering track as theres a delay before the signal actually hits cubase, but it maybe ok for takeing to jam sessions and rehersals. how much quality will be loss using the jack extention?
anyone else ever recorded like this?
