Hello i have some old drums...probably made in the 70s, the make is "Star". Well the membranes, overheads and hi hat are new, but snare, toms and kick are old, they re not damaged or anything. So...i m thinking to do some recordings on the drums, as i can't afford a new set. Do you think i ll be able to get some decent sound? or will it just sound horible compared to a new drum set?

..the mics that will be used is: D112 (kick), sm57 (snare), c1000s (OH), Sennheiser MD421's (toms)

thanks

Go for it!

There's only one way to find out and that's to just go for it.

I've got a set of Ludwig drums from 1967 (blue sparkle). Let me just say the kit was "Rode hard and put up wet" if you know what I mean.

About 10 years ago it was in basement that flooded and the bass drum was in the shape of a heart for a little while.

The bearing edges are completely shot. I removed all the bottom heads and hardware so the kit could be stacked inside itself for transport.

All I have to do is tune them up a bit and smack 'em right... (maybe add just a piece of folded paper towel taped to the edge to kill overtones) and WAMMO!!!

To this day, live sound engineers tell me it's one of the best kit's they've worked with.

So my point is -- go ahead and give your STARS some love, with some paper towels, some tape, and a drum key -- tune em up and get em sounding decent, and mic em up.

Cheers, Rez

Those star kits are the ones made in japan I believe and are of very cheap make. Those drums will be hard to mic well because of it but you can still get a pretty good sound out of them, those kits were made so that people during hta time could have the style of the high end gretsch and ludwig drums without the price.
