I want to record stuff on my laptop, but it doesnt have a good soundcard or anything. Anyone have any ideas of how to make it more recording ready? Thanks

well, it depends what your situation is. are you in a band? or are you just recording yourself playing guitar and vocal demos? if you're just messing around by yourself, i'd recommend a usb or firewire device. i've been using the mobilepre usb by m-audio which is made for people with laptops, but there are a number of other devices out there that are similar and definitely worth checking out. with my device you can hook up instruments directly into it or use xlr mics. this card has built in preamps so it basically is a good way to start recording without having to learn and acquire a lot of equipment. i happen to be selling mine on ebay (getting another m-audio product, just one that'll allow me to do a bit more). check the for sale section of the BBS for the link. with a decent mic, this solution can run around $200. good luck and let us know if you have any questions

Im recording a band, and also just solo work. So i sorta need something that can do both. Thanks for the response. :)

Does the lappy have Firewire (IEEE1394) or USB 2.0 (High speed or Enhanced Open Host Controller)?
How many channels do you need to record at once?
What software are you recording with?
Do you need an interface with mic preamps, or do you plan to tap off from a mixer?

Answers to these questions will narrow things down quite a bit.

well if you have a mixer, then maybe a card like the audiophile usb would be the right solution for you, although i'm not totally sure. you could hook up the mixer to the soundcard to record everything into the computer. i'm sure others may have better ideas than i do though.
