okay, ive established that i have about a $2500 budget, I'd be recording my guitar (i have a stereo setup), bass, drums, and vocals. Thing is, i want to use a hard disk recorder, but I don't want to use a computer to do that. What would I need to set something up that would be a simple but effective studio. I know so far that I need a direct box, or two, a mixer, monitors with a flat response, and some type of recording media. What gear would best suit me?

~thanks

That's some loaded questions there, Metal. :) I think we need more information.

From the research you have done already, what equiptment have you been looking at?

Are you recording the whole band at once, live? Are you doing everything yourself and piecing it together one instrument at a time? Do you want to be able to produce finished CD's with it or will you use your computer for that? Aiming for "professional quality" or more of a project studio?

There are tons of options out there. More information will help narrow down which ones to chose from.

yup, more info..

but i might as well allready start saying that while recording on a budget, sennheiser mics KICKS ARSE!

How many tracks do you want? I'm pretty bored, so...

***16 TRACKS***
---------------------------------------------------------
Total=$2465 +/- $100 depending on recorder

Korg D1600 ($1600) -or- Akai DPS16($1400)
(3) SM57 mics ($240 total)
(1) AT 4033 mic ($350)
(2) Behringer ECM8000 mics ($70 total)
(1) ATM AT25 kick mic ($130)
(1) RNC compressor ($175)
worry about monitors later

Another 16 track option is either the Yamaha VF-16 ($800) or VF160 ($1400). I've heard some nice mp3's recorded on these things, but don't think they really compare to the Korg/Akai units (and I'm a big Yamaha fan).

***12 TRACKS***
--------------------------------------
Total=$2480

Korg D12 ($900)
Monitors: Yamaha MPS5 ($500) -or- Event 20/20's and Hafler TA1100 amp ($500)
(1) AT 4033 mic ($350)
Audix DP2 drum mic package ($500)
(2) Behringer ECM8000 mics ($70)
(2) SM57 mics ($160)
Personally I would wait on the monitors and instead get a descent mic preamp.
