Greetings,

Got a sound blaster 128 and trying to record on it; trouble is, get low level noise regardless of input cable thru 1/8'' inputs; both line in and mic; adjusting input and recording volume doesn't make difference in noise level; I know, get a better card! but it's my girlfriend's pc and she wants to be sure it's not something aside from the card itself, first; could it be the internal card analog/digital signal conversion?

Thanks for any advice!!!

The noise floor on that card could be as high as -40db.

Try disabling CD Audio as a recording source using either the windows mixer or the creative mixer (depending on how it's installed). The CD input seems to be a source of a lot of noise on some soundblasters.

Slackmaster 2000

slackmaster is dead-on, on both counts. even on my soundblaster live, with much better listed specs, i probably don't get better than 55-60db of signal-to-noise. however, that's including mics and preamp (a cheap behringer mixer), so i could be doing worse. that's still better than many non-digital mediums, and i can crunch it down even further with a little dynamics tweaking.
