Hey guys, been reading the forums for a while and enjoying the responses, especially the more senior guys here. So here's my first post:

I have a 7 piece Remo Acousticon set that I'm trying to record in a very small room. I currently just mix in from my iPod because I can't find a guitarist lol (last one is gone) :)

Background/setup: I've been a shadetree recorder for a few years (8?)...I have a 32 channel EuroDesk Behringer mixer that I hate. Some dbx compressors, an EQ, a sonic maximizer, and a CD burner to record to.

2 Rode NT3's (Overhead)
SM-57 (snare)
D112 (kick)
Sennheiser e604's on all toms

Anyway:

I've been reading posts about "phase problems". I don't know what that is, but it seems to happen when you have more than one mic recording a single drum. Could someone explain this? My experience is that when I take away unnecessary mics my sound cleans up. Could that be? :)

I've been close micing all of my drums with varying results. I don't get the big sound that I want...mostly attack. My room is so small and ceiling so low (8 ft) that it's tough to get a pair of overhead mics up without being too close to a wall.

Given this, do you guys have any suggestions or opinions on what I'm doing? My goal has always been to get the best sound possible, it's a hobby I guess. I'm sure I'll be with other musicians at some point so I want to get this right while I'm still on my iPod lol.

BTW - I HATE my mixer....I'm prepared to spend just under $1000 for a new one...thinking Mackie. Any suggestions? I'd like at least 12 XLR inputs.

yes, when two mics are out of phase with each other some frequencies are canceled and that might explain the not so clean sound you get

i dont know what you could do to get a better sound in that room...but use less mics or use them well

phasing problems topics are always on this bbs so take a look around and youll find some good info from the experts here

as for the mixer, you may want to check the yamahas...they have fame of having good preamps
