What's the best way to do harmony guitars as far as how many to record and where to pan them? Like, how would In Flames or Iron Maiden be doing theirs these days?
Don't know about In Flames, but Maiden these days record lots of harmonies, anywhere from 3 to 10, basically what you want is to keep it balanced, if you have 2 lines you can put them in the center one on top of the other, or panned hard left and right, if you have 3 you can put them left-center-right... and so on
If you have the "Rock in Rio" Live DVD, put DVD 2 and watch the interviews, Janick Gers talks a little about it. How they record up to 10 guitars and then they have to choose which ones to play live between the 3 of them.
