I'm relatively new to keyboards and synths. I've been trying to record my Korg N5 into a Presonus Firebox using Cakewalk Home Studio.

I can record MIDI and change patches using the software, but I find when I'm trying to record additional MIDI tracks, the original sound patch I was using for an earlier track gets "overwritten" and plays as the new patch that I am trying to record. In other words, when I press "record", all patches use the same sound.

Is this a channel problem? Does each track need to be set up as a separate track or is there something else going on. I'm pretty sure that I have used different channels on different tracks in trying to resolve this problem but it always works the same way.

Note that I am able to change all of the MIDI tracks to different patches during playback and everything is fine, but I'm reasonably sure that it's not supposed to work this way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MIDI newbie

The problem is that MIDI has no sound whatsoever. All you are recording is information relative to which notes you want the synth to play, when they should be played and for how long. Unless you set up your synth in multi-timbral mode and set the sounds you want on different MIDI channels and then set up each track in the sequencer to transmit to each of those MIDI channels you will always hear whatever sound is at the time selected in the synth, no matter what sound you were using when you recorded.

Multitimbral... Thanks that sounds familiar. I'll have to check that in the manual for the N5.

Sorry I'm a guitar player and this stuff is really new to me. Having trouble with the basics even at this point....

If you set up the various sounds the way you want them, then name it, then save the multi patch to one of the slots - empty or not - in the Korg module you will solve your problem.

For now.

Did you read the Sound on Sound articles I linked for you?

.

Thanks ssscientist Yes I did read the articles from sound on sound. As soon as I saw the reference in the e-mail on this thread it all clicked. I'm starting to get it.

There are just too many variables with the new recording software, Firebox and MIDI. I appreciate everyone's assistance.

Thanks,
Scott...
