I will be using a M-Audio fast rack v2 to record vocals onto backing tracks. I need a recording mic and I don't want to go around and try out lots of mics. Price range cheap to mid. Any advice would be appreciated, I will be recording classic rock tho' not a lot of screaming, Bryan Adams, Faces, Free, Stereophonics etc, that sort of stuff. I already have a Beta 58, any good?
cheers

So tell us whats wrong with 58? Why don't you like it?

I love it! I have used it on stage all my singing career but is it OK for recording? I am very new to recording.
cheers

It's fine for recording.

The only definite answer is try it yourself and see if you like it.

Of course it is. Is it the best? Maybe not but it's a really good first step. You'll find recording with it is a little less forgiving than in a live situation so it may take some getting used to. But definitely start with it & as you learn more about recording gear & your room acoustics you can look to add another mic down the road.

The Beta 58 is a fine microphone for vocals, and if you like the way you sound using it, then use it. However, if you haven't anything to compare with, you don't know if you might like something else better. Since the Beta 58 is a dynamic, you might like to try out a mic that works on a different operational principal.. like a condenser. Lots of vocals are recorded in the studio with a large diaphragm condenser type mic. Several companies have these mics for around 100 dollars. (they go way up from there) The Audio Technica 3035 was a great choice for the money, (made in japan, but discontinued) and I'd try the AT 2035 or 2020 (made now in china) if it were me. I have and like Nady SCM 900's which I got new for about 80 bucks each. Bottom line is to check out a large diaphragm condenser and see if you like it.

Thanks Jeff, I have made a note of your advice. I will go with the beta 58 for a while and maybe try one of the mics you have suggested later if I feel there is room for improvement,
thanks again M8

actually after doing a tiny bit of research that M-audio fast rack v2 looks quite a good little thing
