My band & I are under some pressure to record all of our music live from here on out , at every practice (3xper week). We have a 16 ch mackie mixer, pa, processor, older 4trk recorder...the problem lies in the fact we have 4 people-2guitars-bass-drums & vocals, how can we make this work? who should share the same track? and if there should not be a quality answer then, what is a cheap augmentation or set up?

I'd do a stereo drum pair, mono bass and guitars on another track, and then vox on the remaining one. You could make it a stereo pair with the bass on both, and a guitar per track, plus the stereo drum pair. Then use panning to seperate the guitars.

What 16 channel board? I can tell you how you'd send the stuff to the 4 track if you'd like. How many mics, and what kind of mics do you have to use?

I'd have the lead guitar or other "lead" sound to one track, lead vocals to one track, and the rest mixed to stereo on the (center) two tracks.
