Recording keyboard sounds onto computer

I am using an Alesis QS6.1 in conjunction with Midisoft Studio 6 to record onto my computer. I would like to know how I can go about using my keyboard sounds for recording/playback instead of the midi sounds from my sound card. What connections are required? Do I need a direct serial port cable or can I use an auxillary hook up somehow? Also, what settings need to be changed within my Midisoft program to accomodate this setup? I've tried to contact Midisoft but I think they've gone out of business and Alesis has yet to get back to me!! Thanks for your input!

Depending on the type of soundcard your computer has you can:
A) Go to the nearest music store and buy a midiman cable(around $20), that has a connection on one end for your joystick port and the other has midi in/out connections.Then get two more regular midi cables that will connect to your keyboard. Midi out of the keyboard will go to midi in on the computer/midiman connection.And midi in to the midi out.

B) Some soundcards have direct midi support. In that case you can just connect midi out of the keyboard to midi in on the computer's soundcard, ect.

I use Cakewalk, but as soon as you reboot your computer, it will recognize the midi port/connection. So that it should show up as an output setting in your software program.

You can trigger the sounds via MIDI (MIDI out of PC -> MIDI In of synth), but the only way to actually record the Alesis synth's sounds is to hook up its analog outs to the soundcard and record it as audio.
