recording into soundcard

this is a question thats just kind of been bugging me a bit so i thought i'd ask. for recording into a mixer with mic pre's into my stock soundcard...what would the best to set as the recording volume for the line in on my soundcard? should i have it max? in the middle?

Settings on a dial (any dial) are irrelevant.

It's the strength of the signal in your recording app that's important. Look at the meters.

They should be strong but not clipping (going over 0db).

alright thanks, i was just wondering if changing the volume on the line in would matter really, and if a setting would be best for noise.
