recording in live room vs. dead?

so who here prefers recording (vocals mostly) in a good live room, and who prefers recording in a dead room? and what are your reasons?

saxman I prefer a dead room cos you start with a close up sound and you can then place the vocal wherever you like using reverb and delay.

I totally agree with John on this one....
"Dead" is the way to go.
 
Room?

You guys actually let the singer have a room? Wow.

I usually make then sing outside, way away from me. I of course put a cover over my beloved mic if it is raining, but the singer has to fend for themselves! ;)

But really, dead is better for voice. Unless you are doing the football chant back up vocals, then the bigger the space the better for getting the wall of sound. :)

I have to agree with the rest, Dead is the way to go.... you can always add if you need to (I use some of the patches in an ART Multi verb SE) it has things like courtyard ,large hall, oil tanker and 3 foot pipe (to name a few)I stick with simpler patches that are set up with reverb and delay,then I run it thru a 32 band EQ..... It is much harder to "tune-up" a live room so that it has what you want to hear with no drop outs or "sharp spots"

i pretty much agree with everything that's been said. i guess i was looking for some other odd situations that people have used with good or unusual results. let me know if you think of ahything!

...oh yeah, and if you are recording the singer outside and it starts raining, why not just put some plastic over the singer's head and bring the mic inside!
 
Dead...

It's the only choice I have, but the reverb added later works. I have a dead room and the singers (other than myself) will get to go sit in a closet and sing;) hehehe.
 
hey i got one for u run the mic into an amp thats in a dead room and mic the amp.

Yeah, Mark ... but they start to smell after a while. :)

I record vocals in a live room ... but that's just because I haven't had the $ or the time to treat it yet. Dead is better. I still use gobos with wool batting on one side to make a little 'vocal booth' and add verb later on.
I suppose if I had a well-designed live room ... I could see using it for vocals once in a while ... maybe. But, the drums would always be in there.
