I’m sure this sounds ridiculous but I don’t know how to do it.

If I’m recording, let’s say, a guitar part over a drum part. Where the drums go for the entire song but the guitar riff isn’t always played. I want to be able to start the drums just before the guitar comes in and record the guitar. What I can’t get to happen is when I do this to get all the times the guitar is recorded to go to one file. How is this done?

Also is it possible to playback from a certain point and start recording after? So that what is being played isn’t recorded over until a certain point during playback.

yup...its called a punch in..

I'll answer what I think you're asking.

To start at any point in the song, place the cursor (vertical yellow line) where you want to begin and press "Play". To record from a particular point, I usually place the cursor a couple of bars ahead of where I want the new part to come in, arm a new track for it, press "Record", and start playing the new part at the point the existing part starts to play that section.

What I meant was to record to a track with something already on it and to record only from a certain point but yet still start hearing from before. I'm trying to be clear but I see I'm not. I'm sorry.

Hit the Home button on your keyboard to move the cursor to the beginning of the recorded track. Arm a new track: that is, click on the "R" button to its left. Your guitar or other instrument should be plugged in and ready to go. Click on the red "Record" button in the transport section. Assuming you have your computer hooked up to a device that allows you to monitor the original track and listen to the new part (through headphones, for example), then all you do is listen for the place in the song you want your new part to start, and then begin playing along at that point. That's all there is to it.

I get what you are saying but what I am saying is that I want to record to an already existing tract. A punch in if you will. The thing is I want the recording to start after the playback has already started.
For example I want to start the drum part at 2:00 and then the recording will automatically start at 2:10.
