Recording in 24 bit?

Choose the 32 bit floating point option. It'll give you 32-bit processing and a 24-bit file at the end of the day. No worries.

can I use my 20 bit Layla card and record at 24 bits? (watch it...trick question!)

yes.

If you record a 20-bit signal at 24-bit.. it STAYS a 20-bit signal until you do ANY processing whatsoever to it.. be it a simple change in volume... then it magically becomes a 24-bit signal... ;)

Huh? Really? Okay, which or both of you two know what you're talking about? :)

Did you Check...?

Cool Edit will tell you what your card is capable of delivering.

Options menu, then Settings... Devices tab.

I haven't tried recording bit depths beyond my card's capabilites. That would be interesting tosee if CEP would allow this. Theoretically, you would get "zeros" in the *extra* bits during recording. But, I don't know for sure...

and then when you processed it.. the zeros would become signifgant digits....

xoxo

ps.. CEP allows it.
and does that grid under "devices" actually work?? It only goes up to 16-bit on my shit.. and my card is certainly 24-bit.

The Grid Works For Me....

My Delta-1010s take it all the way up to 96kHz at 32 bits.

Of course, the grid is greyed out, because it is a report window, not a process window (no changes can be made in the grid).
