I am soon going to be recording a hard-core band (you know that stuff with all the screaming) anyway I want to get a fat sound out of the guitars (there are two guitarists) I was have heard that some people put a heavy blanket over the amp (they both have nice amps) to get a heavier sound...This would obviously cut the highs, but I think that would be alright. I should listen to some hardcore songs and see what they are like.

Any sugguestions would be great!

If they have good tone you shouldnt need to do much besides mic the cabinet. I would be carefull about draping a blanket over a guitar amp so you dont overheat them.

Electric guitar tone is mainly dependant on the guitar and amps. Just play with mic positioning and remember you dont have to have a guitar amp cranked to 11 in order to get a big sound.

if they use alot of dist. and bass i would not use the blanket. I tune to b and i like a alot of lowend in my sound, but when i rec i usally cut back a lil dist , alil bass and maybe boost a twat hair of midrange. Then i add some bass on the playback if needed.

But hay if you go the Blanket route, tell me how it worked out, ive been thinkin of trying that, but been pretty happy with the technique i use now so i havent tried it.

Although there may be several ways to get that heavy sound, one of my favorites is to record the main rhythm guitar mono twice and pan them hard left and right in the mix. The slight difference of timing between the two takes is the magic. One take of a stereo rig can sound too sterile or sedate.
