Recording guitars without a mic preamp

I have a p4 1.5ghz and a M-Audio Audiophile SC. I´d like to know if any body out there in LA LA land has recorded Guitars without the use of the mic preamp or maybe using the Slave out on the amp (mine has one). I haven´t bought one yet (a mic preamp) but will soon, meanwhile i´d like to know if i can do this. Thanx

I've gotten some pretty decent clean sounds that way. I've never been able to get a good distorted tone without a mic, though - but I've also never used a box designed for that, like the POD.

Thanks for the Info, how about using the effects send of the effects loop? Isn´t the signal leaving the amp (total newbie man!)

My amp didn't have an effects send.

I've used the headphone out for recording, and I've also plugged my guitar into a few pedals, and then into the sound card's line in. Again, I got some cool clean sounds that way, but distortion was always pretty ratty.
 
I wouldn't recommend using the Slave out on your amp for recording signals as this could fry your gear. Use the effects loop out instead.

And yes you can get decent sounds by using a mic without a preamp when recording distorted guitars. In fact, in most cases it would sound better than recording direct from your amp into the console. Experiment with both and see which you like better.

I would still plan on getting that preamp though. You'll have better control of the signal you are recording.

I'm not familiar with that preamp.. so I looked it up. It has a lot of features for such a low price..

One popular preamp (a version of which better be under my Christmas tree this year dammit) is the ART Tube MP which goes for around $100. You may want to do a search on this site for the ART and the Audio Buddy and compare. Although the ART is probably worth more than the price, in almost every other instance you'll get exactly what you pay for (which is why some people spend $500 and over for a good preamp).. so you may want to do some research before plunking down money on the Audio Buddy.

I've been using the Korg Pandora effects processor for recording direct into the computer. Granted, it's not pro sounding but it's great for getting ideas down and it does sound semi-pro. the best part is it's only 150 dollors and comes with a truck load of features. if you decide to get it plug it into the line in of your cpu.
 
are you wanting to go from guitar to preamp to soundcard?...yes that will work but you wont get much better,if any, of a sound than taking a direct from the amp....you have to mic the amp, into the preamp, into the soundcard......

or just get a amp modeling device like the Pod or J-Station....
