Recording guitar to a beat without recording the beat itselfbeat?

When I turn the metronome on in CakeWalk and record my guitar track the metronome is recorded too (which I don't want). My current workaround is listening to a beat through headphones while I record to CakeWalk. Is there a better way?
 
Well...

If your workaround is putting on headphones, then I assume you must be micing your guitar, as opposed to recording it direct. If this is the case, then your workaround is the correct solution. Anytime you have a live mic in the room, all speakers and other noise must be eliminated or they will be picked up along w/ whatever you are recording.
If you are recording an electric guitar and want to listen through you monitors while you record, try isolating your amp and the mic in a closet or bathroom, away from your monitors. If you are recording acoustic, you can isolate yourslef, the guitar and your mic in another room and get someone else to push the buttons for you. If no one else is available, then headphones are your only option. (WElcome to home recording!)
If you are recording direct, then your problem is likely mixer settings. To solve that, I'll need more info. WHat are you recording with? What's your setup.

the setup, my options

I listen to a beat from a metronome through headphones. Yes, I am currently micing a guitar amp, a Johnson JM150 Combo. However, I can also choose to go directly into the soundcard from my amp XLR Direct Output jack adapted to the 1/8" line input.
If I go directly into the sound card, is there a way to hear my playing and a metronome beat through the monitors but only be recording the guitar portion?
 
Sure Zimm - monitor the output of your sound card through your headphones. I assume you are using the internal synth on your soundcard as your click. This will also go out your soundcard and will be heard. Select the input of your soundcard in as your source. Make sure you have line in (if mixer) or Mic in (if direct) and not "what you hear" selected in your input mixer.
Go for it.

You're right, I am using the sound card synth to generate my MIDI click.
Sorry about not describing my situation more clearly. I'll follow your instructions and let you know how I do.
