I have a computer equipped with AMD Athlon XP 2400, 512Mb Ram, SB Audigy Platinum.

I want to direct record my guitar (Gibson L6S Deluxe) and amp (Laney VC30) with the computer.

I have a shop here where I live that sells Berhinger DI100 active direct box,
can i use it to record the guitar direct into cubase with good results?

i've noticed this direct box will also enable me to record the amp itself direct to the PC via the Speaker Out on the amp, will this give me good results when recording direct?

I'm plannig on connecting the direct box to the Line-In 2/Mic 2 on the Audigy front module, is this good enough?

also. in cubase, what do i need to do to get good resukt with the setup above (plug-ins, EQs...)

I don't want to change hardware in the PC for this.
thanks a lot

It will work, but it won't sound just like your amp does. People don't realize just how much of an amp's sound is determined by what type of speaker is in it. My Peavey Classic 30 is a completely different amp because I took out its Peavey Blue Marvel speaker and put in a made-in-England Celestion Greenback.

If you run from your speaker out into the direct box, you lose all the character that the speaker and the amp cabinet give the sound.

Logical...
but if I use an amp simulator like Guitar Rig or Amplitube, or any other Amp and Speaker simulator, will it give me a good results?

i also planning on replacing the HH-Invader in my VC30 to celestion vintage 30, i have heard it does wonders...

It won't do what you think. You still have to have the speaker hooked up (if it's a tube amp) or you will blow the output transformer. If you are still going to make noise, stick a 57 in front of it.

Ever since I switched from the amp modelling crowd to real amps (especially tube amps), I've been really down on every simulation technology I've heard, with the one exception of Tech21's stuff. Everything else just doesn't sound quite right. It seems that in an effort to make the sound of whatever they're emulating noticeable, they go overboard with it.

The Vintage 30's can be great, but just beware that it might make your amp a lot louder. The Vintage 30 has a higher efficiency than a lot of speakers used from the factory. You have to be a little careful about the Celestion speakers. They are legendary for their british sound, but recently Celestion outsourced their production to China and the quality dropped drastically. The only Celestions still made in England are the Bluebacks (their top-of-the-line). See if you can get a used Vintage 30 on eBay or something, one that was actually made in England.

I have the speaker connected... it is a combo amp which have additional outpot to exteranl speaker, and the DI i saw is Active and according to the manufactor (Berhinger) it is capable of handling up to 3000W.

what is 57? sorry for my stupidity (?)

shure sm57 mic ...

good for micing amps

]:-)

btw ... i do (not really professional stuff) - but i go out via the "line out" of my Sovtek Mig-60 head directly into my soundcard ...

there's nothing like the sound of an old and beaten up ´Les and a tube-head

saaweeet!!
cheers

So what are you recomend me to do?
I want to be able record my guitar direct and/or guitar via amp.
I don't want to change pc hardware
i'm willing to spend around 60-80$ external hardware.
i want to be able to apply effects in cubase so the sound should be clean.

thanks
