recording from vinyl

Hi I am trying to digitize some old vinyl records. I have my phono plugged into the record in of a cassette deck and the deck plugged into the line in on my sound card. When you hit record on the cassette deck it sends the signal through...
Anyways I am able to record ok with total recorder and save the file etc...
What I want to know is some tips for editing the pops and clicks out. I downloaded audigy and audio maestro sound editor and have been tinkering a bit. They both have effects that help deal with this but I am not getting real super results. Is there a particular filter that I can apply manually that will work better. If anyone has a wealth of experience at this kind of thing I will appreciate it.
 
I would suggest SoundForge and some of there plug-ins designed for that type of work. (vinyl restoration)
 
The actual plug-in is Sonic Foundry (now Sony Pictures) Noise Reduction. It's very expensive and you need a DirectX "host" (like Sound Forge or Sound Forge XP but any should do). It will work miracles. It is actually several plug-ins in one package: noise reduction (like hum and buz), click and crackle removal and vinyl restoration. I can't recommend this enough.
 
CE pro II has a very decent click/pop eliminator and good noise reduction.
 
Sound Forge Professional 7.0 costs $399! The specs say that a Vinyl Resotration plug in is available, meaning it costs even more. I'd like to look at CE Pro II. What does CE stand for, or who publishes it? (Google gave me 1.3 million sites to look at.)

Thanks. Cool Edit is now Adobe Audition, and lists for $299. So is there a low-cost editing package that will take the plug-in? At $300 plus, my LPs will stay in their covers, or I'll listen to pops and scratches like the old days...
 
There's another thread on this board about going from tape to computer. They have suggested Audigy as a free package. Does Audigy work with the Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction software? (I see on the Audigy site a bunch of "freeware" plug-ins.)

Why are you plugging it into the tape deck first?

You should be using a record player preamp. Most old stereos have them, you can get them as stand alone boxes and some record players have them built in. Without the preamp the records will not sound quite right because the preamp adds a special EQ curve to all records.
