What basic equipment do I need to record from vinyl records to digtal CD's? I would also be interested in buying equipment.

If you have a computer all you need is a stereo RCA to 1/8" stereo cable. Radio shack will have these. Then just output the record player to the computers soundcard input, adjust level and record. Software should be simple enough just do a search on free stereo software recorders. Something like Cool Edits demo will work fine.

But you can't go straight from a turntable to a soundcard. A cartridge has to go through a phono-preamp. Not just to give it some gain, but also to adjust the response curve to the proper RIAA standard. If you have a stereo that has an pre-amp out on it....you could come from that but otherwise you'll have to pick-up a phono-pre. Musician's Friend has them.
I'm a vinyl junkie. I currently have about 5000 albums and still I buy more. Geez........
